This part of the web site is about grandfather Dewis Wilson and his ancestors.
His part of the family tree has been split into two diagrams, one is his paternal branch (the Wilsons) and one is his maternal branch (the Bettisons).
The Wilson Branch | The Bettison Branch
The Wilsons lived in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire. This village was originally called Hucknall Huthwaite until it was renamed in 1907. The direct male Wilson line were all miners.
Dewis Wilson was named after his grandfather. His grandfather's uncle
was also called Dewis. This is an unusual christian name, but after some
investigation, this is possibly its origin.
Possible Origin of Dewis
The only Wilson to escape Huthwaite and the mines was Dewis'
great-grandfather Joseph.
In the 1861 census he had moved to Shireoaks near Worksop, but was still
a miner.
But by the 1871 census, he was living in Wales, a small village in South
Yorkshire where his occupation was a grocer. He also appears in the 1879
Whites directory as a grocer and draper.
1879 Directory Entry
Dewis' maternal line (the Bettisons) also came from Huthwaite. This branch of the family has been difficult to trace because Dewis' grandfather Johnathan Bettision was brought up in Huthwaite by his aunt Gilly Bettision. As far as can be established at the moment, it looks like he was born in Ripley, the illegitimate son of Ann Bettision. She died in Sutton at the age of 38.
Below are photos of Dewis' parents Joseph Wilson and Harriet Bettison.
