This part of the web site is about grandmother Mary Holmes and her ancestors.
Her part of the family tree has been split into two diagrams, one is her paternal branch (the Holmeses) and one is her maternal branch (the Cowlishaws).

The Holmeses originally came from Ibstock in Leicestershire. Simon Holmes moved to Derbyshire (first Staveley and then Clay Cross) around 1860. Unfortunately he had a serious mining accident in 1868 which left him unable to walk.
More information about Simon's Accident
In the 1891 census, it also shows that Simon Holmes adopted a girl called Emma Davis. She married Ernest Wragg, so see the Wragg page for her details.
His son John Holmes moved to Sutton-in-Ashfield in 1905. He lived in
a house called Sandlant House in Glen Street, named after his mother who
was Emma Sandlant.
The Sandlants came from Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. Emma's
father William was a butcher and was listed in Piggotts 1835 trade
directory. listing
Emma's great grand father was also called William Sandlant. He came to a sticky end. In his sixties, he was convicted of theft and was transported to Tasmania.
More about William Sandlant.
The Cowlishaws came from Crich in Derbyshire.
This is Mary's father John Holmes, his wife Elizabeth and their first five children.
From left to right, the children are Simon, Mary, Fanny, Effie and Emily. So the photograph must have been taken about 1899 after Effie was born in 1898.
John wrote down some of his church experiences. These are
here.
